1IP (First Grade Intensive Preparation)
Our First Grade Intensive Preparation (1IP) class is an 8-lesson summer course designed to prepare students for first grade math by giving them a strong foundation in the addition and subtraction of single-digit numbers.
Each 1IP lesson reviews 2 lessons of our KB (second semester of kindergarten) curriculum. Topics covered include:
- Lesson 1 – Subtraction: Overview of meanings and methods. Nested triangles and rectangles. Line segments
- Lesson 2 – Subtraction: Parts and wholes. Comparing addition and subtraction. Area.
- Lesson 3 – Story problems: Addition or subtraction? Addition and subtraction with number sequences. Symmetry.
- Lesson 4 – Inequalities. Missing addend problems. Adding on a number line. Sums with 5. Sums with 6.
- Lesson 5 – Sums with 7. Sums with 8. Addition practice.
- Lesson 6 – Sums with 9. Sums with 10. Addition and subtraction word problems. Review of addition facts. Inequalities. Subtraction as taking away.
- Lesson 7 – Counting down to subtract. Combined addition and subtraction practice.
- Lesson 8 – Fact families. Difference – how many more or less. Review.
Our Intensive Preparation classes are an ideal way to improve your children’s math skills and fully prepare them for the coming academic year, while avoiding the nearly universal deterioration of math skills that results if children neglect math over the summer.
